The story
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is an action-adventure stealth video game and is the third action-based Metal Gear title made specifically for the PSP. The gameplay consists of two primary modes: Mission and Mother Base. Mission are the actual action sequences of the game where the player must infiltrate an enemy territory or fight a boss, whereas Mother Base is an army management. Some changes have been made to the standard Metal Gear formula: the player is now unable to move or shoot while laying down and while pinned to a wall, making Peace Walker the first game since Metal Gear to lack any crawling ability.
What it’s like
Dusty jungle greens, sun-bleached Central American hillsides and the cool blue glow of a base's management screens give Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker a handheld-scale look that still reads as cinematic, with sweeping camera pulls over ruined villages and the occasional cutscene of heavy, painterly lighting. The soundtrack leans on warm orchestral swells and brassy military themes, broken up by quiet radio chatter and the hum of helicopter rotors. Missions unfold at a deliberate, stop-and-start pace: you creep through foliage, plan a route, then spend longer stretches back at your floating base, tending soldiers, recruiting prisoners and upgrading equipment in a slow, methodical loop. The vibe is brooding but oddly tender, a Cold War-era conspiracy told through patient, talky scenes between old soldiers and a restless young ally. Violence is frequent and firearms-driven, with stealth knockouts, gunfights and boss battles; there is some blood and murder, but no gore for its own sake, and the tone stays more melancholic than horrifying. It suits a late-evening session on the couch or a commute with headphones, and it's for players who enjoy tactical planning, long-running character drama, and the slow satisfaction of building a private army.
