The story
Rise to the challenge and join the hunt! In Monster Hunter Rise, the latest installment in the award-winning and top-selling Monster Hunter series, you’ll become a hunter, explore brand new maps and use a variety of weapons to take down fearsome monsters as part of an all-new storyline.
What it’s like
Lush, saturated greens and warm amber light fill the wide hunting grounds, with dappled canopy shade, misty mountain valleys and bright red-orange volcanic rock in the sun-scorched zones. The art direction leans painterly: lacquered Japanese village architecture sits among rolling forest, and the palette shifts from cool blue dusk to glowing lantern-lit nights. Sound carries much of the mood, with bright, rhythmic percussion and flutes in the village hub, and tense, pounding drums when a monster charges into view. Flora and fauna move with weight and personality, and the creatures are the star of every frame. Hunts run in tight, escalating bursts of action, broken up by long stretches of gathering, crafting and wandering through the camp, so the rhythm alternates between rush and easy calm. Violence is constant but cartoonish: monsters are wounded and fall rather than gore, and the tone stays upbeat and playful, with a comical cat companion and friendly villagers. It suits a Sunday afternoon with a controller, co-op sessions with friends, or a long stretch of satisfying, low-gore combat. Best for players who enjoy mastering weapons and big creatures in a bright, good-humoured world.
