The story

NBA Street Vol. 2 is a basketball video game, published by EA Sports BIG and developed by EA Canada. It is the sequel to NBA Street and the second game in the NBA Street series. It was released on April 28, 2003 for the PlayStation 2, GameCube, and, for the first time in the series, on the Xbox. Japan was only able to see a PlayStation 2 release of this game. The GameCube version was also planned to be released in that region, but it was canceled for unknown reasons.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated polygonal courts under hard daylight and sodium-orange city dusk, with crowds rendered as bobbing flat-shaded silhouettes and rooftop and alley venues that feel like sun-baked concrete. The camera hugs the action in tight, swooping angles that snap into slow instant replays, each one a small burst of showboating. Sound is a loud, gleeful mix of hip-hop beats, crowd roars and sneaker squeaks, with the commentary cracking jokes over the top. Its vibe is brash, sweaty and playful: a loud Saturday afternoon at the park, or a couple of friends passing a controller back and forth on a lazy evening. Pacing is fast and arcade-quick, with short games that reward flashy trick chains and stylish dunks over patient strategy. Tone is cheerful and irreverent rather than tense, with the rivalry between streetballers and the hunt for skill points giving a light, personal sense of progress. Violence is absent; the only contact is a cartoonish shove or a comically exaggerated fall, so it sits easily as a playful, low-stakes pick. It suits anyone who wants a boisterous, goofy romp with friends or a quick hit of over-the-top showmanship, and anyone nostalgic for early-2000s sports arcade games.
