The story

Need for Speed: Most Wanted is a single-player racing video game and the ninth installment in the Need for Speed series, following Underground 2. The game centers on street-racing gameplay, featuring a variety of events and racing circuits set within the fictional city of Rockport.

What it’s like

Hot-neon night city and sun-washed afternoon boulevards, all glossy chrome, wet asphalt and smeared light streaks, with a sleek urban palette of teal, orange and violet. The HUD is loud and punchy, the soundtrack a relentless stack of hard rock and electronic tracks that pulses under every chase, and police sirens and tire squeal punctuate the rhythm. Bullet-time slow motion stretches the moment when a cruiser clips a corner, and the day-night cycle shifts the streets from warm glare to moody after-dark glow. The pace is frantic in bursts: races are short and combustible, with long stretches of open driving between events, and the feel of drifting through tight turns is the core pleasure. The tone is high-octane and swaggering, with a sense of cocky cat-and-mouse rivalry rather than real danger. Its violence is cartoonish: cars crash, explode and get wrecked by police helicopters, with no blood or gore and little menace. It suits a restless evening, a wired weekend session, or anyone who wants arcade speed with a bit of rebellious style. It is for players who love stylish, competitive chase fantasy and want something loud, fast and unserious.
