The story

There's no reason to be afraid of the dark. Fed up with his fear of the dark, Sam transforms himself into Pajama Sam - world's youngest superhero and resolves to confront Darkness! With help from King the mine car, Otto the boat, and a host of fascinating characters.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated hand-painted backdrops in primary colours, with the whole world drawn in soft, rounded cartoon shapes that make even a dim cave or a shadowy attic feel friendly rather than frightening. Night scenes lean into deep blues and purples, with lamplight and glowing details picking out objects one at a time, so the dark feels like a playful puzzle box rather than a threat. The soundtrack is bouncy and cheerful, with light xylophone-style melodies and cartoonish sound effects, and the voice acting is broad and warm. The pace is unhurried point-and-click: wander a neighbourhood of whimsical locations, poke at things, solve gentle item puzzles, play small trivia and mini-games, and trek back and forth between rooms without any real time pressure. Emotionally it is light and reassuring, a story about a small boy building courage and finding that the dark holds nothing to be scared of. Intensity is very low: no violence, no gore, no real peril, only mild comic mischief. Best suited to young children and the adults who play alongside them, or anyone wanting a sweet, low-stakes comfort game for a quiet afternoon.
