The story

Curtis Craig is a quiet young man. He has a steady job working for the WynTech Industries corporation. He has a lovely girlfriend, Jocilyn. He's been out of the mental hospital for exactly one year. All Curtis wants is to live a normal, happy life, but something seems to have other plans... Strange events, inexplicable and terrifying, begin to happen all around him. Curtis begins to doubt his own sanity, and the very fabric of reality. Then... the murders begin...

What it’s like

Phantasmagoria 2 is built from full-motion video shot on sound stages and dressed with pre-rendered, still-painted backgrounds, so every room has the staged, slightly airless quality of a low-budget thriller: flat fluorescent office light, cramped apartments in muddy amber lamplight, and a drab corporate palette of greys and beiges that makes the few saturated moments stand out. Camera work is mostly locked-off, with the frame held a beat too long on people sitting still, and the score is sparse and metallic, long stretches of hum and unsettling drone broken by sudden stingers. Your hands work an inventory and point-and-click interface, and the pace is deliberately slow: conversations, e-mails, and small puzzles that stop the scene from moving until you solve them. The vibe is clinical unease, a paranoid, sterile dread that slides into bodily horror. Intensity is high. Violence is graphic, with gore, a suicide, and sexual content including nudity and some explicit scenes, and the dread often lands harder than the shocks. It suits a late night alone with headphones on and a taste for dated, unsettling interactive cinema. It is for players who want a mature, adults-only mystery about a fractured mind, and who can sit with discomfort and cruelty.
