The story

Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams is an updated version of Silent Hill 2. It contains all of the content of the original version and adds several pieces of new content. The most significant is a new short scenario called Born from a Wish, where players take control of Maria from her first moments right up to where she first appears in the main game. Also included is a sixth ending to the main scenario and a minor feature that allows the player to turn off the graphical effect, which makes the game look like it was shot on cheap film stock.

What it’s like

Murky fog over a grey American town, bruised dusk light and the flat, sickly glow of a handheld radio's static, all rendered in the PS2's soft-edged polygons and a film-grain filter that can be switched off. Fixed camera angles pull you through corridors of rust and dripping pipes, and the score is a hum of distorted ambient drone and sudden metallic scrapes, with long stretches of near silence where your own footsteps are the loudest thing in the room. The mood is dread-soaked melancholy, a slow grief that festers into something claustrophobic, best suited to a late night with the lights off or a long, solitary session with headphones. Pacing is deliberate and puzzle-driven, with backtracking and eerie waiting rooms that let tension build without constant action. Emotionally it follows a grieving man confronting what he has buried, and a woman who is both comfort and threat. Violence is present and grisly, with monstrous creatures and brief, bloody combat; the horror lives in dread, suggestion and disturbing imagery more than gore, and there is sexual and psychological unease throughout. Made for players who want atmosphere, mystery and unsettling psychological horror rather than jump scares alone.
