The story

PowerSlave: Exhumed is a Kex engine enhanced port of the PlayStation and SEGA Saturn versions of Powerslave (Exhumed). Its improvements include high resolution and modern gamepad support. The content of the original games remains unchanged.

What it’s like

Chunky, pixel-stippled corridors of sandstone and hieroglyphs unspool in a first-person view, lit by torch glow and the cold blue of ankh-shaped pickups, with the dim, sepia-tinged dimness of a buried tomb. The Kex engine adds sharper resolution and smoother frame rates, but the original's compact, claustrophobic rooms and sprite-based enemies remain intact. Sound is a loop of synth-heavy, mournful Egyptian-flavored tracks that swell when something lurches out of the dark, with mechanical gun thumps and the croak of undead guards filling the gaps. The mood is retro dread with a playful edge, the kind of thing that suits a late evening alone or a nostalgic afternoon with a controller. Pacing is brisk and room-by-room, built around exploration, switches, and sudden ambushes rather than long quiet stretches. Violence is constant but stylised: gunfire, exploding enemies that burst into pixelated gore, and a steady stream of creatures to dispatch. Frightening in short jolts rather than sustained atmosphere, and never bleak for long. Made for players who want old-school first-person shooting with a dose of tomb-raiding mystery and don't mind blood spatter that looks like it came from 1996.
