The story

A bundle containing ports of Red Dead Redemption and the Undead Nightmare expansion missing multiplayer components and including some parts of the GOTY release.

What it’s like

Sun-bleached and sepia-toned, with dusty badlands, pine-dark mountain snow and gold-hued dusk over scrubland, the look of this open-world western leans into wide, empty vistas and rolling horizons under a hazy, saturated sky. Hoofbeats, wind over grass, distant coyotes and a sparse, mournful guitar score carry the quiet stretches, while gunfire and town bustle punctuate them. Its vibe is weathered, wistful and unhurried, a long ride through a fading frontier that suits a slow weekend, a long-haul flight, or an evening of drifting between side quests. Pacing is deliberate: travel and ambient detail fill much of the time, with bursts of action and a steady run of optional gambling, hunting and odd jobs. The emotional register is melancholy and reflective, following a hardened outlaw trying to reckon with his past and protect his family as the old West gives way. Violence is frequent and stylized, with gunfights, executions and bloody deaths, and slurs and racist attitudes appear in period dialogue. It suits players who want a rich, atmospheric world to get lost in, with moral weight and a lot of room to wander.
