The story

Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition includes the bonus content from the PlayStation 2 version and introduces several changes to accommodate the Wii Remote's motion controls. The aiming system features a larger reticle that changes from green to red when targeting an enemy, replacing the original narrow laser sight. A “quick knife” command is added, allowing automatic targeting of the nearest enemy or object, and motion-sensitive quick-time events supplement traditional button prompts. Visually, the game is comparable to the original GameCube version and generally improves upon the lower-resolution graphics of the PlayStation 2 release. However, a few graphical elements—such as low-detail herb models—appear to be carried over from the PS2 version. The Wii Edition also supports the classic controller, restoring traditional controls and the original laser sight aiming. Additional differences include a lower overall difficulty and slightly faster animations for Leon’s actions.

What it’s like

Dark, sodium-yellow village nights and cramped, candlelit interiors give this survival horror its look: murky greens and browns, heavy shadow, and a handheld-feeling over-the-shoulder camera that keeps you close to the protagonist's back as he moves through rural Spanish ruins. Sound does much of the work, with creaking doors, distant church bells, the wet shuffle of approaching villagers, and sudden stings of score that spike the tension before settling into near silence. Pacing alternates between slow, watchful exploration and abrupt, scrappy firefights, with the Wii Remote's motion-sensitive quick-time events adding a jolt of physical urgency. The mood is dread-forward and grimly tense rather than cozy, with the rare breather in a quiet merchant's shop. Violence is frequent and sometimes grisly: zombie-like villagers are dismembered and shot, with blood and gore on show, and jump scares are common. This suits players who want an old-school, controller-in-hand horror experience and don't mind a bit of brutality, especially those who enjoy motion-control tweaks or the lighter difficulty of this edition.
