The story

Rogue Legacy is back! But now it's got a 2 on the end of it! Rogue Legacy 2 is a genealogical rogue-lite. That means it has all the trappings of a typical rogue-like (randomized runs, changing characters, and more), but with persistent upgrades, and persistent dead heirs. In this game, your legacy defines you. Spend your parents’ inheritance and grow the family manor to give your children a better fighting chance. Each child is unique, with their own traits and abilities. Your daughter could be a Ranger. She could also be vegan. It’s a new experience every time. Rogue Legacy 2 also lets you play how you want to. Go hard and fast, and dive deeper into the depths of a randomly-generated world. Or take it slow and steady and build your character up until you’re ready for greater challenges.

What it’s like

Chunky pixel sprites against dark, hand-painted castle backdrops, with the family manor glowing warm in its upgrade screens. The palette runs deep purples, mossy greens and candlelit ochres, and the rooms feel lived-in, full of portraits and clutter that change shape as the procedural depths reshuffle. Sound leans on bright chiptune-leaning themes that get tense when a boss wakes, with soft ambient drones in the hub. The feel in the hands is snappy and responsive, a run lasting twenty minutes or two hours depending on how far you push. Violence is cartoonish and frequent: enemies burst into pixel bits, blood is minimal and stylised, and there is no gore or sexual content. Death is frequent and light in tone, with dark humour in the lineage details, such as a child's trait or quirk. Pacing is brisk within runs and unhurried between them, with a steady sense of patient growth. The vibe is cheerful-grim and wry, suited to a late-night session or a stretch of background play. It is for players who enjoy roguelites, metroidvanias and gradually building something across many attempts.
