The story
Brooklyn mobster and prolific hit man Jimmy Conlon has seen better days. Longtime best friend of a mob boss, Jimmy is haunted by the sins of his past—as well as a dogged police detective who’s been one step behind Jimmy for 30 years. But when Jimmy’s estranged son becomes a target, Jimmy must make a choice between the crime family he chose and the real family he abandoned long ago. Now, with nowhere safe to turn, Jimmy has just one night to figure out exactly where his loyalties lie and to see if he can finally make things right.
What it’s like
Gritty night-city grain: long stretches of Brooklyn after dark, sodium-orange streetlight pooling on wet asphalt, cold blue-steel interiors and the flat glare of fluorescent tunnels and bar backrooms. Jaume Collet-Serra shoots much of it with restless handheld movement and tight, claustrophobic framing that stays close on faces, while the chase sequences widen into busy, clattering streets and rooftops. The score is a brooding synth-and-strings pulse that swells during confrontations and drops to near silence in quieter, guilt-heavy scenes. The vibe is weary, rain-slicked noir with a melancholy core, the sort of thing to watch late at night or on a long drive when you want momentum over calm. Pacing is relentless once the night starts, with a few breathing spaces for father-son conversations. Its emotional arc follows an aging enforcer, worn down by a lifetime of violence, slowly reaching toward a son he abandoned. The intensity is significant: frequent shootings and brutal, close-quarters fights, with real bloodshed and a persistent threat of death, though the gore stays mostly short and sharp rather than lingering. It suits viewers who like crime thrillers with a human ache beneath the action, not anyone seeking something gentle.
