The story
Space Station 13 (ss13) is a multiplayer role-playing game. Originally created by one person named Exadv1, development has been continued by members of the fan base.
What it’s like
Space Station 13 is played through a bare, top-down tile grid in plain monochrome-leaning pixel art, with flat colours, blocky sprites and utilitarian station corridors lit by dull fluorescent-style tones that flicker into red alert glow when things go wrong. The sound is sparse: clacks of machinery, a few blips and alarms, and long stretches of ambient hum that makes the empty decks feel tense and lived-in. Its vibe is dry, sardonic and improvised, somewhere between a rainy-afternoon tinkering session and a late-night paranoid shift on a crewed space station, with conversations unfolding through typed chat. Pacing is entirely set by the players: quiet maintenance and paperwork can drift for an hour, then a single shift can tip into chaos, sabotage and hasty cover-ups. Intensity is moderate and mostly abstract: combat exists and deaths are common, but blood and gore are small pixel effects, and the real tension is social, with secret identities, espionage and betrayal rather than graphic brutality. Emotional register is wry and collaborative, and the most memorable arcs are the ones players write themselves, from earnest new engineers to scheming traitors. It suits people who enjoy emergent roleplay, dark comedy and unscripted group storytelling, and who like their sci-fi scruffy, talky and unpredictable.
