The story
Splat scores of enemies and hunt for treasure in this single-player focused action shooter. Play as a mechanic working with Deep Cut – a trio of swashbuckling musicians – and venture out into the mysterious Spirhalite Islands! Customize your character, kit yourself out with mechanical gadgets and ink-splattering weapons, and take on waves of foes called Salmonids as you raid the islands for salvage. This is mainly a single-player adventure, but you won’t be alone: one member of Deep Cut will raid alongside you in a powerful bot. You can also join with up to three other players online or via local wireless.
What it’s like
Bright, saturated colour and bouncy, ink-spattered energy, with the cartoon-pop sheen of the Splatoon series: squid-kid characters, splashes of paint across every surface, and a soundtrack that leans on upbeat band music. The islands are described as mysterious, so expect a more brooding, exploratory tone beneath the candy palette, with salvage hunting that rewards patience and wandering. Pacing alternates between frantic wave-clearing and quieter stretches of searching and gadget tinkering, and the relationship with the Deep Cut musicians, who swagger and joke, gives the adventure a playful, companionable warmth. Combat is cartoonish and bloodless: enemies are splatted and dissolve in colourful ink, with no gore, and the fear level stays low to moderate, mostly from being overwhelmed by numbers. It suits a relaxed evening on the couch, a comfortable solo session with a bot companion, or a co-op night with friends who want a light, silly shooter that still rewards exploring. It is for players who enjoy customising a character, collecting gear, and sinking time into a colourful world without needing grim stakes.
