The story
The Binding of Isaac: Repentance is the ultimate edition of the genre-defining roguelike, with so many additions and improvements that it feels like a brand new game. Experience Isaac's adventures with new twists, terrifying turns and over 500 hours of new gameplay!
What it’s like
Crude, hand-drawn sprites in a grimy, fleshy palette: pale childlike figures on basement floors, blood-red tears, bile-brown and bruised-purple rooms, and a cramped top-down perspective that feels like peering into a cluttered, sour-smelling attic. The sound is a lo-fi, chiptune-leaning score that loops with an unsettling chirpiness, punctuated by wet squelches, coin clinks and the sharp crack of enemy deaths. Every run is a fresh descent through randomly generated floors, and the rhythm is quick and tense: rooms clear in bursts of frantic shooting, then pause for item rummaging, where the pleasure lies in reading absurd, gross and occasionally tender item descriptions. Its tone swings between dark comedy and grim dread, with religious imagery and grotesque bosses played for macabre laughs. Violence is constant but cartoonish, all blood and gore as stylised spray, with some disturbing themes of abuse and body horror that land more as unease than shock. Best for players who like tight roguelike loops, bleak humour and a dose of gross-out weirdness, not for anyone wanting something gentle.
