The story

Robert McCall finds himself at home in Southern Italy but he discovers his friends are under the control of local crime bosses. As events turn deadly, McCall knows what he has to do: become his friends' protector by taking on the mafia.

What it’s like

Sun-bleached Italian coastline in hard midday light, whitewashed alleys stacked above the sea, and then the abrupt shift to dim, sodium-orange interiors and rain-slick night streets. Antoine Fuqua's direction favors steady, deliberate framing: long quiet stretches of an ordinary village life, lingering on faces and small domestic routines, before the camera tightens into close, kinetic handheld as violence breaks out. The score leans on low synth pulses and brooding strings, with sudden silences that make the impacts land harder. The vibe is warm-sunlit dread, a slow-burn thriller that builds tension through patience before erupting. Pacing is measured for most of its runtime and then turns sharp and brutal in its final act. Its emotional register is quietly protective: a withdrawn, controlled man slowly giving himself permission to care for a community that has taken him in. Intensity is high: frequent, graphic and bloody violence, close-quarters beatings and shootings, and a grim, menacing criminal presence, with some cruelty toward the innocent. It suits adults who enjoy vigilante revenge thrillers with a glossy Mediterranean backdrop and aren't looking for anything gentle.
