The story
Melanie is a very special girl. Dr Caldwell calls her "our little genius." Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite, but they don't laugh. Melanie loves school. She loves learning about spelling and sums and the world outside the classroom and the children's cells. She tells her favorite teacher all the things she'll do when she grows up. Melanie doesn't know why this makes Miss Justineau look sad. THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS is a sensational thriller, perfect for fans of Stephen King, Justin Cronin and Neil Gaiman.
What it’s like
Cold, clinical rooms under flat fluorescent strip light give way to grey concrete corridors and a ruined, overgrown England in washed-out, bleached daylight, the prose sharp and observational, with long quiet stretches of schoolroom routine set against sudden bursts of hunger and panic. Its vibe is bleak but tender, a dread that sits beside childlike wonder: a classroom where a gentle, curious young mind is studied and cared for behind locked doors, and the unease of wondering who is really watching whom. The pacing is steady and deliberate through the quieter scenes, then tightens into hard, sharp movement when the outside world presses in. Violence is present and can be graphic, with bodies, bloodshed and a constant threat of being eaten, though it arrives in sharp episodes rather than wallowing in gore. Emotionally it follows a sheltered girl discovering what she is and a teacher torn between duty and compassion. Best for readers who want a thoughtful, unsettling survival story with a human heart, not for anyone seeking something gentle.
