The story

The Talos Principle is a philosophical first-person puzzle game from Croteam, the creators of the Serious Sam series, and written by Tom Jubert (FTL, The Swapper) and Jonas Kyratzes (Infinite Ocean). Players are tasked with solving a series of increasingly difficult and complex puzzles woven into a metaphysical parable about intelligence and meaning in an inevitably doomed world. This definitive version contains the original puzzler in all of its glory and the ambitious expansion The Talos Principle: Road to Gehenna.

What it’s like

Sun-bleached ancient ruins under a huge, quiet sky, all crumbling stone, lush overgrown grass and still water, rendered in a clean, luminous first-person view that lets you take in every lit colonnade and sunlit gate at your own pace. The soundtrack is sparse and airy, with soft choral tones and long pauses where the only sounds are wind, distant birdsong and the faint hum of machinery, so the world feels spacious and unhurried. Puzzles are built from fans, lasers, portals and cubes, and the pace is patient: you work through a room, step back, then notice the next idea. The mood is contemplative and gently melancholy, with a thread of wonder and a steady undertone of questions about what it means to exist. Its people are few and mostly voiced through terminals and written fragments, so the emotional arc is a quiet, self-questioning journey rather than a crisis. Violence is absent and there is no gore, fear, or cruelty; the tension is intellectual rather than physical. It suits a rainy Sunday, a slow late-night session, or anyone who wants a thoughtful puzzle game for people who enjoy big ideas, careful problem-solving, and a calm, meditative pace.
