The story
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Hearts of Stone is the first major expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, released in October 2015. It adds a new storyline set in the existing game world, where Geralt is hired to deal with Olgierd von Everec, a nobleman with a mysterious and cursed past. The expansion introduces new characters, quests, enemies, and the Runewords system, which enhances gear with powerful effects. It emphasises narrative depth and moral choices, consistent with the tone of the main game.
What it’s like
Dusk-washed Velen and the gloomy hills of Toussaint, rendered in the painterly, smoky palette of the main Witcher 3 world: wet mud, candlelit manors, bruised purple skies over ruined fields. The score leans on mournful strings and a folk-tinged lute, with long stretches of wind and distant bells when you wander. Quest pacing is unhurried and conversational, built around dialogue scenes, card games, and slow investigations rather than constant combat, though fights with grotesque creatures and armoured knights land with weight and some gore. Violence is frequent and bloody, with dark fantasy horror in the monster hunts, and there is adult content and grim cruelty in a few quest threads. The vibe is brooding, wistful, and morally grey, a melancholy ghost story with a romantic undertow. It suits a long, quiet evening with headphones, or anyone who wants a self-contained dark fairy-tale expansion with the series' sharp writing and meaningful choices.
