The story

For a thousand years, the Vikings have made quite a name and reputation for themselves as the strongest families with a thirst for violence. Thorfinn, the son of one of the Vikings' greatest warriors, spends his boyhood in a battlefield enhancing his skills in his adventure to redeem his most-desired revenge after his father was murdered.

What it’s like

Hand-drawn animation with weathered, earthy textures: muddy browns, grey northern skies, and the pale green of fjord-side hills, with blood rendered in stark, dark red. The camera lingers on wide landscapes and still, frozen moments of exhaustion, and the stillness often breaks into sudden, kinetic sword fights with fast cuts and heavy impact. The score swings between sparse strings and wooden flutes in quiet passages and driving percussion in battle, with long stretches of wind, surf and creaking ships. The vibe is bleak, weary and reflective, with a slow-burn sense of cold, travel-worn survival. It suits a rainy evening with time to sit with it, or a long watch that can absorb a lot of hard material. Intensity is high: frequent graphic violence, bloody battle, mutilation, executions, and sexual violence and cruelty in the early stretches. The emotional arc follows a bitter young man slowly confronting what vengeance costs him, a story of penance and gradual change. It is for viewers who want a serious, historically grounded epic about war and moral reckoning rather than escapism.
