The story
Women's Professional Billiard Association's star sensation Jeanette Lee teams up with developer Celeris, Inc. to create the third installation of the Virtual Pool series by publisher Interplay. Featuring a new single player mode and online gaming capabilities to accommodate multiplayer action over a LAN or a modem, Virtual Pool 3 Featuring Jeanette Lee continues the tradition that made previous installments a commercial success. The game offers numerous game modes from which to choose, including a career mode that allows you to begin as a local player and move up through six stages on the proverbial success ladder. You can also play head-to-head against Jeanette Lee (aka "Black Widow"), adjust camera angles, set up shots, play in a tournament with 4, 8, 16 or 32 players and choose from 9-ball, 8-ball, straight pool and several other game configurations.
What it’s like
Clean polygonal tables under warm overhead lamps, with green felt that stays bright against darker surrounding rooms, and a camera you can swing around each shot to line up the angle. The look is plain and early-2000s PC, so the appeal is in the repetition: racking, breaking, the soft clack of balls and the murmur of an unseen crowd. It moves at a steady, unhurried pace, one shot at a time, with long stretches of quiet concentration broken by small, satisfying sounds when a pocket drops. The mood is calm and focused, a low-key competitive warmth rather than tension. Progress feels earned gradually as you climb from local halls toward bigger rooms, and the emotional register stays light throughout, with no danger or dread. Intensity is nil: no violence, gore, or sexual content, just the game of pool itself. It suits a rainy afternoon, a casual session alone, or a long evening of play against a friend over a network or modem. It is for people who enjoy the rhythm of a sport, like tinkering with angles and tournament brackets, and want something gentle, familiar, and easy to pick up.
