The story
A Plague Tale: Requiem is an action-adventure game similar to its predecessor. The player assumes control of Amicia and must face against both soldiers from the French Inquisition and hordes of rats that are spreading the black plague. The gameplay is largely similar to the first game, though the combat system is significantly expanded. The game features a progression system in which the player will be awarded additional skills and abilities. Stealth players will unlock skills that allow them to sneak around more efficiently, while those who prefer a more lethal approach will unlock additional combat skills. Locations are also larger, giving players additional options to progress.
What it’s like
Dim, candlelit interiors give way to sun-bleached medieval fields, with the rats rendered as a restless, shifting tide that pours across cobbles and rooftops and turns every torch-lit courtyard into a tense standoff. Colour is warm and earthy, with ochre stone, rain-slick slate and bloodied linen, and the camera hangs close over Amicia's shoulder so the frame feels intimate and watchful. The score is orchestral and mournful, swelling during chases and falling away to near silence when the swarm holds its breath. Pacing alternates between slow, creeping stealth through village lanes and sudden, panicked bursts of combat, with light crafting and resource pauses that let the mood settle. Its tone is grim and tender, a dread-soaked family drama about a sister guarding her younger brother in a world that wants them dead. Violence is frequent and sometimes graphic, with brutal close-quarters kills, fire, and a steady undercurrent of cruelty and death. It suits players who want atmospheric, story-led adventure with real weight and are comfortable with sustained darkness and gore.
