The story

Alien: Isolation is a survival horror game based on the Alien franchise. As Amanda Ripley, daughter of Ellen Ripley, you will navigate through an increasingly volatile world as you find yourself confronted on all sides by a panicked population and an unpredictable Alien. You must scavenge resources, improvise solutions and use your wits, not just to succeed in your mission but to simply stay alive. In addition to the main story mode there's Survivor mode in which the player needs to escape from a specially designed map fulfilling secondary objectives along the way, while being aggressively hunted by the alien. This mode includes online leaderboards.

What it’s like

Dim, cramped corridors lit by flickering sodium lamps, emergency red strobes and the cold blue glow of motion trackers, with heavy shadow pooling in every corner of the Sevastopol station. The retro-futurist art direction is all chunky CRT monitors, scuffed plastic and grimy metal, and the sound design does much of the work: ventilation hum, distant clanks, and the radio static that announces the alien's approach. Pacing is slow and deliberate, built on long stretches of sneaking, scavenging and hiding in lockers while a creature that cannot be fought moves through the vents. Its tone is claustrophobic and tense, a constant low-level dread that spikes into panic, with a steady undercurrent of paranoia from a station full of hostile survivors and androids. Violence is frequent and sometimes graphic: deaths are sudden and bloody, with brief gore when enemies are caught, though the core experience is fear rather than gratuitous action. Best suited to late-night sessions with headphones on, for players who enjoy patient, tension-heavy survival horror and a heroine fighting to stay alive against overwhelming odds.
