The story

Batman, along with many of his allies and adversaries, finds himself transported to feudal Japan by Gorilla Grodd's time displacement machine.

What it’s like

Bold, flat-colour cel animation with heavy ink outlines, the kind of saturated palette you see in woodblock prints: crimson banners against pale parchment skies, moonlit blue forests, lacquered black armour that catches hard highlights. The camera is restless in the fight scenes, cutting fast between sweeping wide shots of castles and mountain passes and tight, kinetic close-ups of blades and fists, while quieter sequences hold on still village rooftops and drifting mist. The score leans on taiko drums, shakuhachi flutes and driving strings, with the silence between clashes doing much of the work. The vibe is playful, lurid and high-energy, a comic-book fever dream with a samurai-movie spine, best for a loud Friday night or a sugar-rush rewatch rather than anything reflective. Pacing is brisk and relentless, the tone irreverent and self-aware, and the central pleasure is watching a familiar cast of heroes and villains reinvented as feudal warlords and ronin. The violence is frequent and stylised, with swordplay, explosions and bloodless but still sharp combat throughout, more exuberant than grim. It suits fans of superhero animation and anime action who want spectacle, humour and bold design over emotional depth.
