The story

A modern reimagining of one of the most iconic games of all time, Final Fantasy VII Remake harnesses the very latest technology to recreate and expand Square Enix's legendary RPG adventure for the current generation. Set in a post-industrial fantasy world that has fallen under the control of the shadowy Shinra Electric Power Company, take on the role of Cloud Strife - a mercenary and former member of Shinra's elite Soldier unit - and team up with anti-Shinra organization Avalanche as they step-up their resistance.

What it’s like

Smoky dusk over a stacked industrial city, with sodium streetlamps, neon signs bleeding into rain-slick plates, and the sickly green glow of mako reactors pulsing through the dark. The palette runs from sooty greys and rust to vivid teal and gold, and the camera moves with a cinematic swagger, sweeping over rooftops and tracking characters through crowded slums. Battles are fast and kinetic, with sword and gunfire crackling through the air and sharp, weighty impacts, but the violence stays stylised rather than gory. Orchestral arrangements of classic themes swell over tense ambient synth and sudden percussive stings, while quiet moments of footsteps and distant city hum leave room to breathe. The mood is melancholy and charged, a moody urban adventure with flashes of sentiment, and its pace alternates between unhurried wandering and bursts of combat. The arc follows a jaded mercenary slowly drawn into a rebel cause, which gives the emotional throughline a bruised, earnest warmth. Intensity is moderate: frequent combat, explosions, and grim themes of corporate cruelty, but little blood. It suits players who want an evening of cinematic spectacle, and fans of character-driven JRPGs and stylish action.
