The story
The VR Edition of the critically acclaimed BAFTA award-winning Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. From the makers of Heavenly Sword, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, and DmC: Devil May Cry, comes a warrior’s brutal journey into myth and madness. Set in the Viking age, a broken Celtic warrior embarks on a haunting vision quest into Viking Hell to fight for the soul of her dead lover.
What it’s like
Dark, close-cropped darkness broken by fire, bone-white ritual paint and the sickly green glow of Helheim's roots, all rendered with an almost photographic density of moss, wet stone and weathered wood. The soundtrack is mostly ambient drone, distant chanting and the whispering voices that crowd Senua's head, so the world feels like it is pressing in from every side. Its vibe is bleak, intimate and unsettling, a dread that sits in the chest rather than jolting it. Combat is frequent and visceral, with heavy, deliberate swordplay and brief but brutal sequences of dismemberment and gore, while the horror is mostly psychological: hallucinations, distorted voices and rot-soaked landscapes. Pacing is slow between fights, with long stretches of puzzle-solving and quiet exploration that let the atmosphere settle. In VR the camera is placed right at Senua's eye level, so the dread becomes physical, with cramped caves, looming figures and sudden silences that make every step feel exposed. Emotionally it follows a fractured, grieving woman confronting her own mind, and her arc is about endurance rather than redemption. It suits a late-night session alone with headphones, and it is for players who want heavy, grim atmosphere and a grief-soaked story, not light or gentle play.
