The story

Helldivers 2 is a cooperative third-person shooter in which squads of up to four players are deployed from orbit onto hostile planets to complete strategic missions. Players select loadouts of weapons, armor, and stratagems that allow them to call in orbital strikes, supply drops, vehicles, and turrets during combat. Friendly fire is always active, requiring coordination between teammates. The game features a persistent galactic war where community-wide performance determines which planets are liberated or lost.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated chaos: sun-bleached alien planets in acid oranges, bruised purples and rust-red dust, with lurid explosions, dropping supply pods and the glossy, stylised satire of a propaganda poster brought to life. Hard-edged third-person framing keeps the squad in view while the screen fills with bugs, robots and tracer fire, and the soundtrack swells with brassy, martial march cues over constant gunfire, crunching footfalls and a cheerful radio voice that talks you through every disaster. The mood is manic and darkly comic, a cheerful militarism that teeters into absurdity, best suited to friends on voice chat or a solo player who enjoys a loud, mischievous mess. Pacing is brisk and relentless, with each mission building into a scramble of called-in strikes and sudden reversals, and a shared galactic campaign that gives every run a sense of collective stakes. Intensity is high but cartoonishly so: frequent alien gore, explosions and dismemberment, with a constant threat of fire from teammates, and nothing lingering or truly cruel. It is for players who want co-operative chaos, sardonic humour and the thrill of coordinating a squad under fire.
