Jason Lives - Friday the 13th Part VI

Directed by Tom McLoughlin

The story

Tommy Jarvis, tormented by the fear that maybe Jason isn't really dead, unwittingly resurrects the mass murderer for another bloody rampage.

What it’s like

Cold blue-grey dusk over pine woods, then sudden white lightning flashing across a graveyard and a rain-slicked lake, with the camera mostly handheld and bumping through the trees at slasher-tempo. Its palette is murky greens, drab browns and sodium-orange porch light, with a lot of plain, dated 1980s film texture and a glossy, cheap-looking sheen on the gore. The score is a jaunty synth pulse that gives way to stings and wild electronic swells, and the rhythm is lurching: long stretches of hanging-about at a summer camp, then short, sudden kills. Its vibe is campy, goofy horror with a wink, the sort of thing for a rowdy Friday night with friends or a silly Halloween rewatch. The violence is frequent and graphic, with stabbings, impalements and bloody deaths shown in close detail, though it lands as cartoonish rather than bleak; there's sexual innuendo and some nudity, and the fear is jump-scare rather than sustained dread. Plot-wise, a troubled young man becomes convinced the killer is not dead and sets him loose again. It suits fans of the franchise and people who want slapstick splatter horror, not anything gentle.
