The story

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (called Monster Hunter 4G in Japan) is the newest installment in the popular Monster Hunter series, which has sold more than 28 million units worldwide to date. In Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, players will take on the role of a hunter that joins up with a traveling caravan to explore new lands and towns along the way. This grand adventure will include hundreds of quests to take on a variety of extraordinary creatures that yield valuable resources used for weapons and equipment. Launching on Nintendo 3DS, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate represents the biggest leap forward ever for the series with more new content and exciting features than ever before. Also, for the first time ever for the Monster Hunter series on a handheld system, players will be able to join up with friends over the internet via the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, as well as the previously available local wireless option.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated fantasy landscapes on a handheld screen: sunbaked desert canyons, lush jungle greens, and snowy tundra rendered in chunky, cheerful 3D with a painterly sheen. The camera hangs close behind your hunter, so every swing, roar and leap feels physical, while the soundtrack swells with brass, drums and choral chants that turn an ordinary hunt into an event. Between the fights the mood softens. Camp scenes glow with cooking fires and bustling caravan chatter, and the tone is buoyant, earnest and a little silly, with dancing, farming and rabbit-like Felyne companions adding warmth. Violence is constant and stylised: monsters are battered, carved and bled in cartoonish splashes rather than realistic gore. Pacing is deliberate and repetitive by design, built around hunt, gather, craft and repeat, with a slow climb from timid newcomer to seasoned monster-slayer. It suits long evenings with a tea, a commute on the train, or quiet hours with friends online. It is made for players who love methodical grinding, gear-building and cooperative hunts, and it is less suited to anyone wanting gentle, violence-free play.
