The story
Four Indigenous teenagers in rural Oklahoma steal, rob and save in order to get to the exotic, mysterious and faraway land of California.
What it’s like
Dry, sun-bleached humour with flat Oklahoma light, dusty roads, and rusted pickups parked under huge open skies, all shot in a loose, observational style that lets scenes breathe. Warm daylight and deep shadow inside cramped houses, a lived-in palette of faded reds, dusty greens and denim, and a soundtrack that leans on bright indie rock and easygoing country-tinged melodies with long pauses of ambient road noise. The vibe is wry, tender and low-key, the kind of show you put on for a lazy afternoon, a long drive, or a comfort rewatch with a friend. Its pacing is loose and episodic, with deadpan one-liners and sudden bursts of absurd comedy that give way to quiet, grieving moments about loss, belonging and staying put. The emotional arc follows four friends slowly learning to hold onto each other while their dreams pull them in different directions. Intensity is moderate: some scuffles, petty crime, teenage drinking and drug use, and a few tense, sharp scenes, but no gore and little real menace. It suits viewers who want funny, warm, character-driven storytelling with a strong sense of place and Indigenous perspective, and who enjoy comedy that is as much about mood as jokes.
