The story
Resident Evil 4 is the sixth installment in the Resident Evil series and is often noted for its departure from the fixed camera angles of earlier titles. It introduced an over-the-shoulder third-person perspective, faster-paced gunplay, and more dynamic controls. The game features larger, more open environments and a new AI system that enables enemies to coordinate attacks and attempt to corner the player. Enemies exhibit more human-like behavior, such as climbing ladders, opening doors, and using weapons.
What it’s like
Murky, sickly-green village light and rain-slicked European wilderness, with the camera pinned over the protagonist's shoulder so every corner feels close and cramped. Rural Spanish farmland, a crumbling chapel, and a dim castle interior are rendered in heavy shadow, with flickering lanterns, muddy textures and blood-spattered stone. The soundtrack is sparse and unsettling: rattling ambient drones, distant wails, and sudden stingers that spike when the enemies close in. Pacing swings hard between tense, quiet exploration and frantic gunfights, with quick-time button prompts and a ticking sense of being hunted by villagers who coordinate, flank and climb ladders. Violence is frequent and graphic: gunshots, stabbings, gory dismemberment and bursts of blood, with frightening monsters and some hostage-related cruelty, though the dread comes more from ambush and panic than from lingering gore. Best for players who want a tense, action-heavy survival horror experience with a strong sense of dread, rather than anything gentle or low-stakes.
