What it’s like

Cold, mud-brown and sea-grey at first, then warmer as the island opens up: this is a game of rain-soaked forests, sunlit ruins and firelit caves, with a painterly grade, dust hanging in shafts of light and a slightly gritty, high-detail finish that suits a moody, weathered look. The score is sparse and string-led, swelling during combat and falling away to ambient wind, creaking timber and distant animal calls, and much of the time you are just listening to your own footsteps on wet stone. Its vibe is tense but tactile: survival grit with quiet stretches of exploration, the kind of thing to play on a dark evening with headphones. The pacing alternates steady climbing and puzzle-solving with sudden, brutal bursts of close-quarters fighting, and the tone sits in a grounded, somewhat bleak register as a young woman is pushed from fragile to capable. Violence is frequent and often graphic, with bloody kills, impalements and some disturbing scenes of injury and death; there is no sexual content, and the fear is more about being hunted than gore for its own sake. Best for players who want an atmospheric survival adventure with a clear character arc and do not mind a steady stream of violence.
