The story

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is the sequel to Super Mario Galaxy and the fourth 3D platformer entry in the Mario franchise. The sequel retains many elements from its predecessor, such as the adventure being in outer space, the element of gravity, and recurring objects such as Launch Stars and Sling Stars. Returning items include the Bee Mushroom and the Fire Flower. However, the game introduces new elements as well, such as the utilization of Yoshi, new power-ups like the Cloud Flower, and the use of a guide within the game for beginner players.

What it’s like

Bright, buoyant cosmic whimsy: candy-coloured planetoids float against deep blue and violet starfields, and the camera swoops around each spherical world so that gravity seems to bend beneath Mario's feet. The orchestral score leans on warm brass and bell-like chimes, with playful reworkings of familiar Mario themes that swell whenever a new galaxy opens. The game moves in quick, bouncy bursts punctuated by quieter drifting moments, and its pleasures come from tight jumps, spinning launches and the odd sudden burst of fun. Its tone is sunny and generous, with a gentle sense of wonder rather than tension. Violence is cartoonish: enemies are stomped or knocked into space, and death is a brief puff of sparkles followed by a quick retry. Time limits and tricky sections add a light pressure, but nothing frightening or harsh. It suits a weekend afternoon with a controller, a relaxed evening, or a family game night, and it is well suited to players who want a joyful, low-stress challenge, to newcomers who appreciate a helpful guide, and to anyone craving a sweet, imaginative adventure.
