The story

A 3D platformer and first Wii entry in the Super Mario franchise, Super Mario Galaxy sees Mario jump across planets and galaxies with varying items, enemies, geographies and gravity mechanics in order to reach his enemy Bowser, who has attacked the Mushroom Kingdom and hijacked Princess Peach's castle with her inside.

What it’s like

Bright, storybook space: bulbous planetoids floating in deep blue and violet voids, sparkling starfields, and the glowing, hand-sculpted warmth of Nintendo's art direction, with candy-coloured worlds that range from sun-drenched beaches to frozen, glassy tundras and pastel orbs wrapped in sweets. Its soundtrack is the draw: lush orchestral swells, harp glissandos and cheerful woodwind themes that drift between wonder and tenderness, with the chime of collected Star Bits and the wobbly boing of a jump threaded through everything. The feel in hand is buoyant and physical, with gravity tugging you across spherical worlds, so each leap curves and lands with a soft, satisfying thud. The pace is brisk but forgiving, shifting between quick acrobatic challenges and slow, contemplative exploration, and the mood is warm, whimsical and low-stress. Enemies are cartoonish and easily stomped, and the only real peril is the occasional fall into a void, so violence is mild and cartoonish with no gore and no fear beyond a missed jump. It suits a relaxed evening, a comfort replay, or a quiet afternoon with the controller, and fits players who want gentle, wondrous adventure with a sense of playful awe.
