The story
Inspired by the fictional Dr. Heiter, disturbed loner Martin dreams of creating a 12-person centipede and sets out to realize his sick fantasy.
What it’s like
Shot in stark black and white, this film lives in grime: cramped rooms under flickering fluorescent tubes, a dank basement and a concrete parking structure, handheld camera that crowds faces and lingers on squalid detail. The sound is sparse and uneasy, with long stretches of ambient hum and breathing broken by bursts of harsh noise. Its mood is airless and oppressive, a sour, claustrophobic dread that never lets up. A socially isolated man, consumed by a warped obsession, drives the story, and his arc is one of escalating self-delusion rather than any redemption. The pacing is slow and deliberately punishing. The intensity is extreme: graphic body horror, sadistic cruelty, sexual violence, child abuse and kidnapping are all depicted or strongly implied, and the violence is prolonged and unflinching rather than brief. This is not gentle or distracting viewing in any sense. It is made for hardened horror viewers who want transgressive, confrontational extremity and can tolerate sustained, deeply disturbing material.
