The story

The sequel to The Visitors reunites us with those lovable ruffians from the French Medieval ages who - through magic - are transported into the present, with often drastic consequences. Godefroy de Montmirail travels to today to recover the missing family jewels and a sacred relic, guarantor of his wife-to-be's fertility. The confrontation between Godefroy's repellent servant Jack the Crack and his descendent, the effete Jacquart, present-day owner of the chateau, further complicates the matter.

What it’s like

Bright, broad studio comedy in saturated daylight, with the medieval scenes shot in warm candlelit castle interiors and the modern Paris segments in flat, cool office and apartment light that makes the contrast read at a glance. The camera stays mostly conventional and eager: lots of two-shots and reaction cuts, slapstick timed for big facial takes, and a brisk editing rhythm that rarely lets a gag sit still. The sound is a bouncy orchestral score with medieval fanfares and a few anachronistic pop cues, plus constant shouted dialogue and sight-gag squelches. Its vibe is loud, cheeky and rambunctious, the sort of raucous silliness best enjoyed with friends on a lazy weekend or as a light, undemanding watch with a drink in hand. Pacing is quick and farcical, with the emotional register kept deliberately shallow: the central arc is a pair of bumbling, boastful ancestors and their descendants learning to tolerate each other's absurdities. Intensity is low to moderate: sword-swinging slapstick, a few crude jokes and mild innuendo, some pratfalls and bodily humour, but no real gore and no genuine menace. It suits viewers who want rowdy, physical French farce and don't mind broad, unsubtle humour.
