The story

Tomb Raider is a critically acclaimed action adventure that explores the intense and gritty origin story of Lara Croft and her ascent from a young woman to a hardened survivor. Armed only with raw instincts and the ability to push beyond the limits of human endurance, Lara must fight to unravel the dark history of a forgotten island to escape its relentless hold. The Game of the Year edition includes the Tomb of the Lost Adventurer, 6 single player outfits for Lara, 8 multiplayer maps, and 4 characters.

What it’s like

Rain-soaked jungle in cold blue-grey and sickly greens, mud and ash on everything, with the camera pinned close over Lara's shoulder so every stumble and gasp feels physical. Light is mostly overcast or firelit, with flashes of sunlight through dense canopy and the orange glow of campfires in the dark. Jason Graves's score leans on taut strings, low percussion and long stretches of ambient wind and creaking wood, so the quiet moments feel uneasy rather than restful. Pacing alternates between slow, careful climbing and scavenging and abrupt, messy bursts of combat, with hunting, crafting and survival tasks breaking up the story at a deliberate rhythm. The emotional register is grim and bleak, centred on a young woman being broken down and slowly hardening into someone who can endure. Intensity is high: frequent graphic violence and gore, with bloody deaths, animal kills and brutal close-quarters fights, plus a sustained stretch of captivity and cruelty that is harrowing rather than gratuitous. There is no sexual content. It suits a late-night session with headphones on, not a gentle wind-down. Best for players who want a dark, physical survival story with atmosphere and tension.
