The story

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is the eleventh installment of the Wolfenstein series and a sequel to the 2014's Wolfenstein: The New Order. The game follows the main protagonist, William Joseph "B.J." Blazkowicz, in his efforts to ignite a Second American Revolution. The game is played from a first-person perspective and most of its levels are navigated on foot. The story is arranged in chapters, which players complete in order to progress. A binary choice in the prologue alters the game's entire storyline; some characters and small plot points are replaced throughout the timelines. The game features a variety of weapons, most of which can be dual wielded. A cover system is also present.

What it’s like

Harsh, saturated neon bleeding into rusted industrial grime, with the sun-bleached 1960s America of the story rendered in retro-futurist chrome, dingy diners and flickering newsreel colour. The first-person camera stays close and jittery, with heavy shake and sudden lurches when things go wrong, while the widescreen spectacles of dieselpunk airships and occupied streets hold their wide, cinematic framing. The soundtrack swings between driving rock guitar and mournful strings, punctuated by the crack of weapons that feel heavy in the hands. Its vibe is loud, angry defiance with a streak of gallows humour: pulpy, bombastic and fiercely propulsive, best for an evening of pent-up energy or a long weekend of stomping through a fantasy resistance. Pacing is relentless, built around chapter-length bursts of combat, with quieter interludes among resistance hideouts that let the cast's bruised camaraderie breathe. Character arcs follow a damaged war veteran finding stubborn hope amid trauma and grief. Violence is frequent and graphic, with gore, dismemberment and Nazi atrocities depicted onscreen, along with strong profanity and some drug use. It suits adults who enjoy aggressive, over-the-top shooters with a politically charged punch, and it is decidedly not gentle.
