The story

The Curse of the Pharaohs is a downloadable content expansion package for Assassin's Creed: Origins, set to be released in March 2018. It is the second out of two expansion packs for the game, alongside The Hidden Ones. The Curse of the Pharaohs sees Bayek travel to Thebes and the Valley of the Kings, where he will uncover a mystery that will develop into a "living nightmare" for Bayek. Further exploring Egyptian mythology, the expansion pits Bayek against mythical beasts and dead pharaohs.

What it’s like

Sun-bleached desert under a hard noon glare gives way to the cooler, shadowed stone of Thebes and the tombs of the Valley of the Kings, where torchlit passages and gilded sarcophagi glow amber against black rock. The palette leans on ochre, lapis and bruised violet, and the camera stays close to Bayek's shoulder through crumbling corridors, so the dread comes from what the lamp barely reveals. The soundtrack is layered with low drones, distant percussion and a hushed, eerie wind, while combat stings sharpen into hard, percussive hits. Its vibe is eerie and mythic, a slow-building unease with flashes of spectacle, suited to a late-night session with the lights low or a long weekend of exploring at your own pace. Pacing is open and unhurried, with long stretches of tomb-delving and sleuthing punctuated by sudden, dangerous encounters with mythic beasts. Emotionally the tone is grim and tense rather than cosy, following Bayek as he confronts forces that test his resolve. Violence is frequent and stylised: swordplay, arrows and bloody kills against monsters and undead foes, with some gore and creepy horror imagery, but no sexual content. It suits players who love ancient-world atmosphere, mythology-driven mysteries and open-ended exploration with a shadow of fear.
