The story
Prince Akeem Joffer is set to become King of Zamunda when he discovers he has a son he never knew about in America – a street savvy Queens native named Lavelle. Honoring his royal father's dying wish to groom this son as the crown prince, Akeem and Semmi set off to America once again.
What it’s like
Bright, saturated studio color throughout: royal Zamunda rendered in gold-leaf palaces, lush green gardens and hot, glowing afternoons, cut against the warm, busy textures of a Queens barbershop, a crowded diner and a sunlit Harlem street. The camera stays mostly conventional and comfortable, with broad wide shots of ceremony, tidy two-shots for banter and plenty of big set-piece framing that lets the costumes and production design do the work. The score is bouncy and brassy, with pop-soul needle drops and an upbeat percussive pulse that keeps every scene moving. The vibe is sunny, sprawling and mischievous, the kind of breezy comfort watch for a lazy weekend afternoon or a family movie night. Pacing is brisk and jokey, with the emotional beats kept light: a stiff, pampered prince slowly learning humility and a rough-edged young man discovering where he belongs, with warmth between fathers, sons and found family. Intensity is low: some slapstick and crude-leaning comic insults, a few brief scuffles and tense moments, and no gore; sexual humour is present but mostly cheeky rather than explicit. It suits fans of silly, big-hearted royal comedy who want something easy, colourful and affectionate.
