The story
Ashes of Malmouth picks up where Grim Dawn leaves off, expanding the world and story with two new chapters in the epic struggle to free humankind from the horrors of the Aetherials. Deep within the fallen city of Malmouth, the Shaper of Flesh crafts grotesque living weapons that could deal a final blow to the human resistance. You must forge new alliances as you push forward through deep forest, the void and into the city itself in a heroic effort to end the Aetherial terror. Venture into dangerous new parts of the world as you discover unique items, empower your characters and make difficult choices that have a lasting impact on the people of Cairn.
What it’s like
Grimy, sepia-tinted dark fantasy seen from a high isometric camera, with ash-grey ruins, sickly green fungal growth, and the cold blue glow of Aetherial rifts cutting through the dusk. Deep forest gives way to the void and then to Malmouth's rotting streets, where the palette turns to bruised purples and rust. The soundtrack is brooding and percussive, with low drones and metallic clangs that swell during fights, and the sound of loot tumbling and gear clinking gives the game its steady rhythm. It feels heavy in the hands: attacks land with weight, crowds of grotesque creatures pile in, and progress comes in bursts of item-hunting between tense skirmishes. Vibe: oppressive, grimy, and quietly grandiose, the kind of thing to play late at night with headphones on. Intensity is high. Violence is constant and bloody, with gore, monstrous and body-horror enemies, and frequent fear-inducing ambushes, though there is no sexual content. Co-op play softens the solitude. Suited to players who want a long, crunchy action-RPG with a bleak atmosphere and a steady stream of loot to chase.
