The story

Voices of the dead are calling you from deep below the earth. Pilot the Mole, a Soviet drilling vessel, in this PSX-style simulator-horror game set during the waning days of the cold war.

What it’s like

PS1-era low-poly textures bleed and shimmer across a murky, rust-and-olive palette, with the drill cabin lit by dim amber dashboard glow and the flicker of analogue gauges. The camera stays locked inside the vessel for most of the descent, so the world reaches you through cramped sightlines, wobbling viewports and the slow churn of machinery rather than through cinematic cutting. Sound does most of the work: the grind and groan of the drill head, hissing hydraulics, long stretches of static and radio chatter, and whispers that seem to rise out of the rock. The pace is deliberate and procedural, built on checking readouts, managing heat and pressure, and waiting, with dread accumulating in small increments. The mood is cold, isolated and uneasy, a Cold War paranoia folded into claustrophobic subterranean horror. There is fear and eerie unease throughout, with occasional jump moments and grim, unsettling imagery, but little explicit gore. It suits a late night alone with headphones on, and players who enjoy slow simulation, Soviet-era atmosphere and creeping, sound-driven horror.
