The story
In this 1-bit first-person mystery game, a merchant ship called the Obra Dinn has appeared at a London harbor, years after being declared lost at sea. As an insurance adjuster, the player must examine the ship for clues.
What it’s like
Stark 1-bit dithering in pure black and white, with the sea and sky rendered as shimmering stipple and wooden decks as flat, hatched texture, so every frame feels like an old engraving come to life. The camera is a fixed first-person gaze that drifts through a silent, creaking ship, and the only soundtrack is sparse, wistful piano with long stretches of wind, waves and the groan of timber. Its vibe is quiet, eerie melancholy, best suited to a rainy evening with headphones on or a slow, focused hour alone with a notebook beside you. The pace is deliberate and contemplative: you pore over frozen death scenes, piece together a non-linear timeline, and slowly watch the crew's final moments resolve into a shape. The emotional register is mournful and reflective rather than frightening, with the arc of a stranger's tragedy gradually taking form. Violence and death are central but handled through still, bloodless tableaux, so the dread comes from implication and sad discovery rather than gore or jump scares. It suits puzzle lovers, mystery fans and anyone who enjoys a patient, atmospheric unravelling over a sprint for action.
