The story

Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner 2, released outside of Japan as Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 2, is a 2005 role-playing game for the PlayStation 2, and the second and final entry in the Digital Devil Saga series duology. It features new mechanics such as Berserk Mode and a changed Mantra grid system.

What it’s like

Cool, washed-out digital blues and grey concrete give this PlayStation 2 role-player a bleak, sci-fi cast, with anime character art and cutscenes that cut sharply between stillness and flurries of motion. Its world is a fractured, post-apocalyptic network of ruined cities and sterile server-like realms, scored by a restless electronic and rock soundtrack that pulses through battles and drops into eerie quiet between them. The mood is melancholy with a stubborn, tense edge, the sort of game to sink into late at night, with a sequel's grind-heavy rhythm: long stretches of party-building and turn-based fighting broken by punchy boss encounters and dialogue scenes that carry a lot of weight. Its people are a tight group of young misfits and a silent protagonist, each arc about loyalty tested by bleak choices and multiple endings. Violence is frequent and stylised, with death a constant presence in battle and in the story, though it is cartoonish in look rather than gory; there is no sexual content, and the dread is more about apocalypse than shock. For fans of Shin Megami Tensei's demonic-mythology grit, JRPG completists, and players who like grinding toward a satisfying, bittersweet conclusion.
