The story

Space Rangers HD: A War Apart remasters and expands the world of the cult classic Space Rangers 2. The game is developed by the SNK-Games team in close cooperation with fans of the series. The biggest of the improved features is a new scenario dedicated to the pirates threatening the galaxy.

What it’s like

Bright, cartoonish 2D sci-fi art with chunky sprites, star maps drawn in crisp flat colour, and a cheerful, slightly goofy sense of humour running under the war. Its sound is bouncy synth-and-chiptune-leaning tracks and short comic voice bits, so it feels more like a playful space diorama than a grim epic. The vibe is light, tongue-in-cheek and busy: ships hop between planets, trade cargo, mine asteroids, and settle skirmishes in turn-based battles, with a steady rhythm of small decisions and small payoffs. Its stakes are a galaxy-wide conflict, but the tone stays wry, with a lot of banter and quirky characters. Violence is present but abstract and cartoonish: laser fights and mech clashes, no gore, and nothing graphically cruel. It suits an unhurried evening at the desk, a relaxed session with a cup of tea, or a long stretch of tinkering with ship upgrades. It is for players who enjoy strategy and light space-management systems with a sense of humour, and who want a sandbox to poke around in at their own pace.
