The story

A group of people find themselves trapped in the backwoods of West Virginia, fighting for their lives against a group of vicious and horribly disfigured inbred cannibals.

What it’s like

Dim, overcast woodland and muddy riverbanks under flat grey daylight, with shadowy forest interiors that swallow the frame, give this a bleak, grimy look. The camera tends toward shaky handheld movement and fast cuts during chases, and the palette runs to greens, browns and dull blood-red, with a rough, low-budget texture. The score leans on pounding drums and sudden stingers, so the sound design carries as much dread as the images. The vibe is grim, claustrophobic and nasty, with a restless, escalating rhythm that suits a late-night watch with the lights off. Its people are mostly stock figures pushed through panic and survival, and the arc is less about character than endurance. Intensity is high: frequent, graphic gore, brutal violence, dismemberment and cannibalistic cruelty, with the menace landing hard and often. Nothing about it is gentle. It is for horror fans who want a blunt, gruesome backwoods slasher and don't mind a rough, cheap-feeling ride.
