The story
HELL FREEZES OVER in DOOM: The Dark Ages | Revelations, an all-new campaign expansion that unleashes a brutal new chapter of the Slayer’s saga. Wounded and betrayed, the Slayer is thrust into a merciless purgatory only escapable by confronting haunting truths and forging new strength with the help of a mysterious ally. He must ascend from the prison of his mind and fight an abomination of the gods to set his followers on the path to freedom.
What it’s like
Grinding, distorted metal riffs and the crunch of heavy machinery set the tone, with hellish reds, ash greys and sickly orange glow filling vast, gothic arenas. The camera stays close and kinetic, so the view shakes and lurches with every shield bash and blast. The mood is grim and feverish, a claustrophobic descent into a purgatory of the mind, with quieter stretches of brooding atmosphere between the bursts of combat. Pacing is relentless: encounters arrive in tight, escalating waves, broken up by brief pauses for exploration and a slowly deepening sense of isolation. Violence is constant, graphic and stylised, with gore, dismemberment and monstrous demons rendered in plenty of visceral detail, so this is heavy going for anyone who wants something gentle. The emotional register is bleak and driven, centred on a wounded warrior confronting his own guilt and gaining strength through an uneasy alliance. It suits late-night solo sessions when the adrenaline is wanted, and it is made for players who relish punishing, rhythmic combat, dark metal and a hard-edged vision of hell.
