The story

Choose Your Path! Set 4,000 years before the Galactic Empire, you are the last hope for the Jedi Order and the Republic - can you master the ways of the Force to become their savior? Or will you fall to the dark side and achieve ultimate power? Hero, villain, peacekeeper, or chaos-bringer... you and your party will determine the fate of the galaxy! Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a role-playing video game. Players will be able to create their own characters and be able to choose what gender, appearance, class, skills, attributes, and feats they have throughout the game - no two characters will be the same!

What it’s like

Warm sunlit hangar bays and rain-slick city streets give way to starfield voids, dim Sith tombs and ringing Jedi temples, all rendered in a palette of sandy ochres, cool blue-greys and the occasional sickly green of Force lightning. The soundscape leans on Jeff Sherlock's sweeping orchestral themes, which swell during crossroads and drop to quiet ambient hum while you wander corridors. Pacing is unhurried and conversational: long stretches of exploring cantinas, ship decks and desert outposts, punctuated by turn-based party battles that feel more like chess than twitch action, and a cast of companions whose loyalty shifts with every choice. Vibe-wise this is a late-night, settle-in-for-hours RPG with a sense of wonder and a faint undercurrent of moral unease, the feeling of slowly becoming someone you chose to be. Violence is stylised and fairly frequent, with blaster fights, lightsaber duels and some deaths, but nothing graphic; there is brief cruelty and dark-side menace, and some gambling minigames and mild crude humour. It suits players who love character-building, branching dialogue and the slow pull of a long, reactive journey through a galaxy far away.
